A Vision Rooted in Tradition
What started as a personal passion for knitting and natural fibers has grown into something much bigger—a vision to establish Montana as a recognized hub for premium, sustainably produced wool products.
Our Home: Polson, Montana
Nestled on the southern shore of Flathead Lake in the heart of the Mission Valley, Polson serves as the perfect home base for our wool processing operations. This vibrant community of ranchers, artists, and entrepreneurs is situated in an area surrounded by some of Montana's most productive agricultural land, where generations of families have raised sheep and other livestock. The Mission Mountains provide a stunning backdrop while the fertile valley floor supports the kind of agricultural heritage that makes our work possible. Polson's spirit of innovation and community collaboration make it an ideal place to bridge traditional ranching with modern, sustainable manufacturing.
Meet the Founders
Debra J. Lockwood brings over 40 years of fiber arts expertise and an extensive network of yarn enthusiasts to her role as CEO. Her deep knowledge of natural fibers and commitment to quality drive our product development.
David K. Lockwood contributes 25 years of construction safety experience, ensuring our facility meets the highest operational standards. Together, as parents of three neurodiverse sons, they understand firsthand the challenges of finding meaningful employment opportunities for people with different abilities. This personal experience inspired their unwavering commitment to creating viable work opportunities for others and shapes every aspect of their inclusive hiring practices.
The Problem We're Solving
Montana ranks seventh nationally in sheep production, yet most of our wool leaves the state for processing. This represents millions of dollars in lost economic opportunity and an unnecessary carbon footprint from transportation.
Our Solution
By establishing local processing infrastructure, we transform an undervalued agricultural byproduct into premium goods that command higher prices while benefiting local producers and creating sustainable jobs.
Behind the scenes of THE Lockwood Wool Company
Where Ability Meets Opportunity
For too long, Montana's exceptional wool has been shipped away for processing, taking jobs and economic opportunity with it. We're changing that story.
The Lockwood Wool Company transforms local fiber into premium yarn and products right here in Northwest Montana, creating fair-paying jobs, supporting our ranching community, and proving that sustainable manufacturing can thrive in rural America.
